The gender pay gap in professional sports

Even with gains in gender equality, a big pay gap still exists between male and female athletes. Forbes reports that in 2023, the top male athlete made over $130 million. In contrast, the highest-paid female athlete earned about $20 million.

For example, a WNBA players earn much less than NBA players. The average WNBA salary is around $120,000. In contrast, the average NBA salary is about $9 million. In other sports like soccer, the difference can be even bigger when compared to the most high paid male athlete and female.
